Groggy and muddled I reached down without even opening my eyes and sunk my hand into 3 inches of urine beneath my hind quarters.
I sat up quickly as it all sloshed around me filling the entire bathtub base of my tent.
I rubbed my eyes, (with my “non-pee” hand, of course) fully waking up to the realization that my tent was filled to the brim with muddy water.
(Sleepy Richard brain must have told me initially that I peed myself... either that or PTSD from 2nd grade scout camp..)
Either way, I was drenched, cold, and every single thing I brought with me was ruined.
When I packed out on this trip I already knew that a lot of rain was queuing up to hit that night, but I wasn’t worried.
I had a top of the line tent, and wasn’t it made for that kind of thing? WRONG.
The entire night from then on was miserable!
Being cold and wet in the woods when you’re supposed to be sleeping in the serenity of nature is MISERABLE.
My camping pad had completely deflated in my above ground swimming pool, (cough)I mean top-o-the-line tent(cough cough), and even though it was just 2am, there was no hope for sleep whatsoever.
I grumbled through the long(very long), soggy trek back to my cruiser, my wet gear heavy on my back.
My pants were soaked and chafing me in places the water in the shower doesn’t even reach. 😯
Bubbles gurgled out of my boots that had been filled with muddy water from my tent floor.
I sat in my truck staring forward as rain streamed down the windshield.
I thought to myself:
Seriously though,
🎤In hindsight, this was a pivotal moment in my life.
I knew that if I was struggling this much out here - chances are there are many others who suffer the same fate in the outdoors.
I sat there entranced, my imagination darting around on a blank canvas in my mind as I pieced together the ultimate camping apparatus.
Now,
I thought,
huh... I thought.
What if that someone was me?
I mean, I’ve spent the better part of my life in the wilderness and I’m an engineer for the Army Corps of Engineers for goodness sakes!
The plans and ideas were churning so rapidly, I just had to dive in.
I bought a fifty dollar 1978 Sears & Roebuck sewing machine from a junk store and set it up in the corner of my old messy bachelor-pad bedroom.
I went to work, late into the night, every night, after getting home from my “real” job.
Soon the first rough prototypes were born! Birthed them right there in my ´starving college kid´ living room. lol.
It took over 50 tedious prototypes (and me crash-course learning to double-stitch) to FINALLY create a solution that merged all the wonderful aspects of tent camping, while annihilating the short comings.
I named it the Nubé, an incredible "Air Camping" craft that offers complete 360 degree protection from rain, insects, and wind all while offering unbelievable space and comfort inside, like sleeping in a cloud.
The Nubé enabled me and my pack to get ⬆️ up off the ground ⬆️ and thrive in the wild, regardless of the weather.
The comfort and protection this impenetrable fortress offered was too exciting and way too awesome to keep to myself.
So I made it my mission to meticulously design beautiful, hyper-quality, solution-oriented gear that enables all campers to brave the unknown and achieve successful, restorative sleep outdoors:
🌨 Whatever the weather
⛰ Whatever the landscape
🕷 Whatever the elements
🏠 I want everyone to feel at home in the wild.
So we've been going strong at spreading this message of comfort and protection in the wild, and have continue to expand our gear line up - in order to empower you to feel at home in the wild!
The Nubé was just the first of its kind. And we've developed the Nubé exponentially since then, as well as designed several other dynamic shelters to add to our Protection Line Up. (see below)
All of our shelters are equipped with three innovative, patented design pieces to ensure you - and your gear have the most elite protection possible.
👍 The patent tells you that these dynamic features cannot be found incorporated into any other tarps, flys, or shelters. 🙌
Our Closure Sleeves protect the most vulnerable spot on your hammock, the ends. They’re basically a waterproof jacket for your suspension completely sealing the rain(and insects) out.
Other tarps and rainflys have open ends, which makes no sense at all from a full protection stand point. When your hammock ends are exposed, rain runs down your lines and soaks your hammock. They may work ok with light rain, but no true guard when the wind is blowing rain your way!
Our Integrated Gear Stash can store up to 200lbs of backpacks and/or extra gear suspended inside the shelter. The Gear Stash is designed to keep your gear easily accessible, completely protected, and off the ground.
Other tarps and rainflys require you to leave your pack and excess gear on the ground or hanging in a tree exposed to insect infestations, mud, flooding, or even sticky-fingered passer-bys. (I mean raccoons, of course). But Lets face it, your pack and everything inside is your survival out in the wilderness. So we feel it must be protected!
Our Skyhooks allow an easy set-up in nearly any situation. They allow for max spaceship level space inside for you, another person, AND all of your gear.
With other tarps, rainflys, and shelters you have to perfectly center or hang at jusssst the right angle to protect from sideways blowing rain. Its actually quite difficult to get all the angles and centering perfect enough to cover you. Plus, the wind is constantly changing directions!
Clausterphobic? Most other systems you must hang so high into the roof of the tarp you feel like you're in a coffin. And the insect mesh sits right up against you, right in your face. I've actually been bit by insects THROUGH it before. SPACE is SO key for comfort in the wild.
The whole idea behind Sierra Madre is elevating your outdoor experience. It starts with getting a great night's sleep, we created our Hammocks to do just that.
You shouldn't have to suffer through sleepless nights on your adventures. You should be able to enjoy a solid 8 hours of peaceful slumber in the wild, without worrying about waking up sore, stiff, and unrested!
Sierra Madre is the sound of a revolution in the outdoor world. Whereas other corporate conglomerates are figuring out which colors to push next year, Sierra Madre is creating real innovations that empower you in the wild!
That's why Sir Richard Branson (possibly one of the most adventurous people on the planet) backed Sierra Madre. He believes in disrupting the status quo with the best product and service and was thrilled to partner with Sierra Madre.
Sierra Madre gear was created to maximize your time in the wild, the Nubé Air Tent brings protection and convenience to a new level and our Ninox and Pares Camping Hammocks insure the best pressure free sleep you can imagine in the wild. We also created gear to keep you warm while you're in the wild, like our 5in1 Puffle Adventure Blanket and our top line Inferno System.
No matter where adventure takes you, we've got your back.
Our founder, Richard Rhett, created Sierra Madre because of two epic gear failures he experienced in the wild. Both left him stranded and completely ruined his adventures. As a Mechanical Engineer turned Entrepreneur. After over 10 years of building gear, Richard has held fast to our two pillars of our gear design, 1) solve problems, and look good doing it 2) over build it with hyper quality.
“Sleeping in the wild should be restful and enjoyable, when you're not worried about getting wet or cold - it's so much easier to feel at peace in the wild”. Being comfortable, protected, and warm in the wild helps you feel at peace... Feels like home. "That's what it's all about."
"Hello,
My name is Jim Aexfor and I am from Minnesota. I recently returned from a trip with a friend to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in northern Minnesota.
I have a Kammok hammock setup while my friend has your Nubé setup he purchased early this year.
During our trip we encountered a bad storm with 50+ mph winds. During the storm my Glider hammock shelter ripped in half. This happened on day 2 of our weeklong adventure. My friend's Nubé shelter withstood the winds and we ended up adding my hammock above his in the shelter so I had a place to sleep out of the rain. We had another night of rain later on in the trip and had to do the same.
I had to let you know how awesome your product is and what a trip-saver is was for us. Otherwise, the trip would have been pretty miserable for me.
I will be shouting from the mountaintops about the quality of your product and will be advising my relatives and friends to check into your products. Ever since I started hammock camping many of my relatives and friends have become interested in this great outdoor experience.
I will be selling my hammock and investing the money into one of your setups. I am a teacher and a volunteer EMT so during the upcoming winter months I will be saving up to purchase the entire Nubé system.
Thank you so much for your incredible products that saved our trip!
Jim
“I work for REI in the camping department and I also teach wilderness skills for the outdoor school. I have had plenty of experience with other camping gear but not until I tried sierra madre I was never satisfied. Sierra madre has worked the kinks out with their incredible innovation!” — Robert
